DiMAT’s Participation at BIOPOL-2024 – Coimbra, Portugal

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), a partner of the DiMAT Project, took part in the 9th International Conference on Bio-based and Biodegradable Polymers (BIOPOL-2024) held from 22 to 24 July in Coimbra, Portugal.

This significant event aims to disseminate the latest findings and ongoing research in the field of biodegradable and bio-based polymers, drawing leading experts and researchers.

During BIOPOL-2024, UPV showcased the subject: “Use of Natural Additive in Biodegradable Thermoplastic Materials for Food Preservation.” This approach, developed by the researchers Harrison de la Rosa Ramírez, Maria Dolores Sampere Madrigal, and Juan López Martínez, was presented through a series of posters. Their work focuses on developing new biopolymer formulations via extrusion processes that boast enhanced preservative properties.

This research not only explores the potential of natural additives to improve the functionality of biodegradable thermoplastics but also contributes to the validation of the Material Processing Simulator (MPS) toolkit. Developed within the framework of the DiMAT Project, the MPS toolkit is designed to simulate the extrusion process of thermoplastic materials, providing optimal processing profiles in terms of temperature, screw speed, internal pressure, and material volume.

Today marks the second day of BIOPOL-2024, where these contributions continue to garner attention and foster discussions among the more than 200 participants. These attendees include international experts in materials science who have gathered at the University of Coimbra to exchange knowledge and collaborate.

The BIOPOL-2024 conference offers an invaluable opportunity for networking, knowledge sharing, and exploring the latest innovations in biopolymer research.
